《传灯录》曰：世尊在灵山法会上拈花示众，是时众皆默然，唯迦叶尊者破颜微笑。世尊曰：“吾有正法眼藏，涅槃妙心，实极无相、微妙法门、不立文字、教外别传、传付摩诃迦叶。”此即禅宗所传“拈花微笑”公案，亦即世尊与迦叶的大法授受。这可为大乘佛教“顿悟”之说。然而艺术品正为世尊之“花”，艺术给于我们的是对于“花”的悟。
剪纸被冠以艺术这个概念是近几十年的事。这是从西方引进的一个美学术语。其实在民间，剪纸只不过是老百姓在闲暇节日之时，装饰门窗和自身消遣的一种方法而已。有时候也采用到祭祀和巫术当中。剪纸随着地域和自然环境以及文化的不同而风格各异。
前几天，在一个朋友处听到了这样一个情节：“有一位所谓的‘基督徒画家’，自以为就是上帝的选民了，以上帝的名义给很多画家传教。有一天他到一位曾经学过佛学的画家处去，看到在画家的桌子上有一本佛经，他恶狠狠的当着这位画家的面把这本佛经给撕毁了，画家不知所措。”
